I have come to the realization that Life is all about the journeys we take. The grand journey (Life) is replete with potentially many smaller passages through which personal growth occurs; meaning and identity are derived; and wisdom is gained. These journeys can serve to deliver us out of one set of circumstances into new scenarios where we can experience being alive rather than being confined to repeating patterns which do not feed our hearts and minds (death).
“The Open Road” was written in 2015-2016 during a period where I was first introduced to the writings of Joseph Campbell, and while I was processing the loss of my father. It is a song expressing yearning for the path to a better way, place, or set of circumstances. During the time the song was conceived, I struggled with depression, anxiety, and an overwhelming frustration with life unaware I was not accepting life on life's terms nor embracing my own truth. Though my story is not unique, this song was my way of processing my situation. It was a yearning for something different, and at times, relief. I found the only way out alive is to accept myself as I am, and the call for adventure- the open road.
